We take food, water, hygiene supplies, socks and clothing, tents, blankets and sleeping bags directly to people living outside, and help them find a next step.
We serve Louisville and Jefferson County, and nearby Kentucky communities.
We go out every two weeks. Not By Chance is entirely volunteer-run. Nobody is paid, and that includes the board and everyone in a leadership role.
Rick Aubrey — Executive Director
For Rick Aubrey, this work is personal.
Before becoming Executive Director of Not By Chance Outreach, Rick spent years struggling with addiction and experienced homelessness himself. He knows what it feels like to live outside, to wonder where the next meal will come from, and to feel invisible to the people passing by.
Recovery changed the direction of his life, but he never forgot the people still out there.
Sherrie Aubrey — President
Today, Rick and his wife, Sherrie, are at the heart of Not By Chance Outreach. Every two weeks, they load up and head into the community together. Rick brings lived experience to the work, while Sherrie has become just as important to making the outreach possible. She helps gather donations, organize supplies, manage inventory and finances, prepare for each outreach run, and is beside Rick in the field serving people directly.
They approach the work from different experiences, but with the same purpose.
Not By Chance was built on a simple belief: people living outside deserve to be seen, treated with dignity, and given more than a list of phone numbers. Sometimes help means a meal, dry socks, a tent, or a blanket. Sometimes it means listening. And sometimes it means helping someone find the next right step when they are ready to take it.
We do this because we know circumstances can change.
And sometimes, one person showing up can help change them.
Not By Chance, Inc. is governed by a volunteer board. Nobody on it is paid, which is the part of “volunteer-run” that usually goes unsaid.
